C.R.A.P. Design Principles, and other Tips for Creating Eye-Catching Banner Graphics

Banner displays with eye-catching graphics can be an excellent way to promote your business or organization. Here are a few tips for creating an aesthetically pleasing and bold display to catches your audiences’ eyes:

    • Banner graphics need to be large and strong to make an impact. Hard-to-read fonts, small text, or weak images won’t grab anyone’s attention.
    • C.R.A.P. design principles – the four golden rules of graphic design – Contrast, Repetition, Alignment, Proximity.
    • Use the Rule of Thirds – Don’t place your graphic smack-dab in the center of your banner. Create a natural eye-flow by placing key graphics off-center, but not too close to each other.
    • Placing the most important graphical element and message at standing eye level.
    • Create and maintain a consistent look and message to go along with your brand other marketing collateral.
    • Less is more. Keep your message simple. Your banner graphic needs to convey an easy-to-read message at a quick glance from a distance.
    • Make sure your images are placed in a well-lit area. Avoid any direct light that might produce a glare off of a laminated banner.
    • Images that strike an emotional connection will increase the likelihood that your message will relate to that person and stick in his or her mind.
